The English Learners at Sunkist have the opportunity, with parent choice, to receive their education in 3 different programs. They may choose the English Language Learner class (Primary Language Instruction), Sheltered Immersion (English Instruction with Primary Language Support), and Mainstream English (English Instruction).
If a student begins in our English Learner program, they will receive Primary Language Instruction from Kindergarten thru 3rd grade. Part of the students' instructional day is to receive English Language Development, using the Board Adopted Curriculum, Avenues. The goal is to gradually increase the students' level of English, moving into English curriculum studies as they get into higher grades. Our 2nd grade students begin English Mathematics instruction beginning in January. Our 3rd grade students receive English Mathematics instruction from the beginning of the school year, adding English Language Arts instruction in January. In 4th grade, these students integrate with all students independent of their previous program.
It is important to know that all Hueneme Elementary School District teachers are CLAD or BCLAD certified. Therefore, they all have received additional training in how to work with English Language Learners.
