Hueneme Elementary School District

205 N. Ventura Road Port Hueneme, CA 93041

The name “Hueneme” is derived from a Chumash Indian word meaning “half way” or “resting place,” and is pronounced Y NEE MEE. Our district serves families in Port Hueneme and Oxnard, including the unincorporated Silver Strand and Channel Islands Harbor neighborhoods.
HESD educates approximately 8,100 kindergarten through eighth grade students in nine elementary schools and two junior high schools. We have a close relationship with Naval Base Ventura County and we work hard to meet the needs of our military families.
The current ethnic make-up of students in our district is 80 percent Hispanic, 8.6 percent Caucasian, 5.3 percent Filipino, 2.9 percent African American, .05 percent Asian, .06 percent Pacific Islander, and .3 percent American Indian. Approximately 51.8 percent of our students are limited English-speaking or non-English speaking.
The Hueneme Board of Education is pleased to be able to offer our teachers one of the best salary and benefits packages offered to any teacher in Ventura County. Our teachers are working hard to improve the performance of our students and their efforts are paying off. Our students’ standardized test scores improve each year.
We invite you to visit our schools to see first-hand  the good work being done by the employees of the Hueneme Elementary School District.
