AVID is an integral part of Blackstock Junior High School. The first AVID site team began six years ago with a principal, assistant principal, four teachers, and a counselor. The pilot team attended the 2005 Summer Institute, and returned eager to begin working with the 28 students chosen for the pilot program. Those students are now starting college.
Our program has grown steadily over the years. Our site team has grown to include over 50% of our certificated staff, and serves over 300 students in sixth through eighth grade. Currently, we have five sections in sixth grade and three each in seventh and eighth grade. We welcomed four new teachers to our team this year.
Our site team works as a professional learning community focused on improving student achievement schoolwide through the use of data and professional development. We present strategies to the staff and the AVID community and continue to refine our program and our practice. In 2008 we were honored to be named a nationally recognized AVID Demonstration School.
