Welcome to 7th Grade World History/8th Grade U.S. History!  I look forward to serving you and your family this year!  Student, parent and teacher communication is essential to the success of all. Students, it is your responsibility to develop a routine or procedure with your parents to communicate your progress in U.S. History/World History.  I will partner with you in this endeavor by promising to return phone calls, emails and other messages expeditiously.  I will request specific correspondence from time-to-time, asking for verification by parent signature or written response.  However, please feel free to contact me at anytime to discuss your child’s progress, California Content Standards and Analysis Skills, or ideas that you may have to improve our program.  I enjoy partnering with parents and students in the educational process!  I look forward to a challenging and interesting year.

Course Focus:

The focus of this class is to guide students towards a greater appreciation of U.S. History and the democratic process.  I hope to spark a lifelong fascination and interest in all things related to the social sciences and the world of history.  I hope to do this by encouraging students to open the doors to learning with the tools of enquiry and research methods, but most importantly, I hope to spark students’ natural curiosity and a determination to know “why?”  The following overarching areas of study in U.S. History will be addressed:

F     Three Worlds Meet:  Beginnings to 1763

F     Creating a New Nation:  1763-1791

F     The Early Republic:  1789-1844

F     A Changing Nation:  1810-1860

F     The Nation Divided and Rebuilt:  1846-1877

F     America Transformed:  1860-1914

F     Modern America Emerges:  1880-Present

The following averarching areas of study in World History will be addressed:
  • Introduction to World History
  • The Growth of Islam
  • African Civilizations
  • Asian Civilizations
  • Medieval Europe
  • Civilizations of the Americas
  • European Renaissance and Reformation
  • Early Modern Europe
It is also my goal to prepare students for standardized testing in the spring.  This includes a review of 6th and 7th grade social science curriculum.  It is an ambitious endeavor and the full cooperation of students and parents is needed.

In addition to the 7th and 8th grade social sciences curriculum, it is my hope that students will learn transferable skills necessary for success in high school and beyond.  This includes an appreciation for character development including, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, PREPAREDNESS AND A GOOD ATTITUDE, WHICH MAKES ALL THINGS POSSIBLE.  I will work with my students to encourage them to be independent thinkers, self- starters, and assertive communicators who take responsibility for their own learning.

Conduct with Respect to Guest Teachers/Substitute Teachers & Outside Speakers

*      Your conduct is first and foremost a reflection of your personal values, beliefs, ethics and upbringing; as such you are independently responsible for your conduct.  However, it is also a reflection on me and my classroom management.  As such, I take misconduct on the part of my students and discourteous behavior as a personal affront.

*      Consequences for negative individual and/or class conduct will be swift and severe.
