The Hueneme Summer PASSport Program

Promotion by Achieving Student Standards

The Hueneme Summer PASSport Program, Promotion by Achieving Student Standards, is a supplemental instructional program designed to help the following students meet grade level standards:

  • Students in grades 2-7 who are retained/recommended for retention
  • Students in grade 7 who are in danger of ultimately not meeting the high school exit exam
  • Students in grades 1-7 who are at risk of retention1, academically deficient2 or in need of intervention to meet grade level standards

Program Highlights:

  • Site Based when possible, i.e., offered at most school sites
  • Small Class Sizes
  • Small Group Instruction-to target individual needs
  • Prescribed Curriculum focusing primarily on reading/language arts
  • Two hours/day 20 Days

Grade Level Features:

Grades 1-2

  • 10 students per class- self-contained
  • Whole group and small group instruction
  • Guided Reading emphasis

Grades 3-5- Reading/Language Arts Emphasis

  • 20 students per class
  • Small group rotation with 6-7 students per group
  • Guided Reading
  • Computer Lab time - SuccessMaker reading and math programs
  • Accelerated Reader/Paragraph Writing

Grades 6-7- Reading/Writing Emphasis

  • 20 students per class
  • Small group rotation with 10 students per group
  • Guided Reading and Paragraph Essay Writing
  • SuccessMaker Computer time/ Accelerated Reader

Grades 6-7- Math Emphasis-Pilot Program in 2002

  • 25-30 students per class
  • Small group rotation to computer lab
  • Directed lessons/hands-on experiences
  • SuccessMaker Math Concepts and Skills Computer Program

Summer Programs
Goals/Purposes

PASSport-Promotion by Achieving Student Standards

  • Help students who are retained, at risk of retention1, or academically deficient2 in grades 1-7 progress toward meeting grade level standards, primarily in the area of reading/language arts
  • At minimum maintain progress through summer, but preferably accelerate achievement, particularly in the area of reading/language arts standards.

Migrant Education

  • Meet the needs of at-risk students who are identified as potential candidates for retention
  • Provide academic enrichment for all migrant students (grades pre K-7)

Science Based ELD

  • Provide supplemental English Language Development opportunity for students in grades 3-6 who are at least at the intermediate level in English.
  • Provide enrichment and acceleration of English language acquisition

Pre-K Program

  • Provide opportunity to use/develop socialization skills
  • Develop K Readiness skills
  • Gain diagnostic/placement information
  • Provide Pre K parent preparation

1 At risk of retention: students who are not meeting minimum criteria for promotion
2 Academically deficient: students who are meeting minimum criteria for promotion but still have low SAT 9 scores in reading, math, written language expression; students not meeting grade level standards
