Larsen Elementary School

Introduction:

  Larsen Elementary School, in the Hueneme Elementary School District, is located in south Oxnard, California.

  It was built in 1952 to house less than 300 kinder through 8th grade students.

  Currently we have a student population of 800 kinder through 5th graders

At Ansgar Larsen Elementary School, we believe all students deserve an education that incorporates a meaning-centered, integrated curriculum, requiring critical thinking and the use of educational technology.  We believe students should be actively involved in a respectful, caring, cohesive educational community.
 

Mission:

At Ansgar Larsen Elementary School, we believe it is our duty to equip all students with the academic, linguistic, technological and social skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex and culturally diverse society. We are committed to providing our students with the tools they need to be successful. Our students deserve a balanced educational program consisting of rigorous academic grade-level standards, aligned curriculum, ongoing assessment and well-designed lessons that challenge, motivate and inspire learning to a higher level. We value the critical partnership between our school, our parents and our community. Our school motto, "Believe….We CAN Achieve," inspires students to develop personal goals and believe in their potential to achieve. Larsen School’s educational philosophy is to provide a safe learning environment in which every child has the opportunity to reach his/her fullest academic potential. Each member of the Larsen School staff shares the firm belief that every child has dignity and worth, and deserves a high-quality education.

Academic Programs:

  We offer three academic programs for English Learners: 

Ø Mainstream English

Ø Structured English Immersion

Ø Alternative Bilingual

  Parents have a choice in selecting a program, after viewing a presentation on the various programs, and receiving information regarding their childs proficiency assessments. 

 

Enrichment Programs:

  Referral to After School Program: (Based on student assessment data)

Ø  Academic Hour taught by certificated teacher who teaches the same grade level during the day.

  Rosetta Stone Lab:  for students in grades 4 -5 recently arrived in U.S. (Newcomers)

  Read Naturally Lab:

Ø Reading fluency, targeted grades 3 4 and Newcomers

  Successmaker Enterprise (Pearson Learning):

Ø Computer program in Reading and Mathematics, individualized and tracked by software.

  Accelerated Reader (AR) (Renaissance Learning) Program:

Ø 6 computers in school library dedicated to A.R. testing.

Ø Student computer in classroom available for A.R. testing.

Ø  A collection of A.R. Titles available for students to read while in the computer lab.

Ø Computer Lab open for A.R. testing in the morning from

§  7:30 a.m.- 8:00 a.m.

§  After school from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. 

Ø Monthly goals set by grade level, special activities, prizes, and certificates to those meeting their monthly goal.
