Important Information for the 2019-2020 School Year
Towards the end of last school year, our school leadership team, Bard staff, district personnel, the Hueneme Police Department, PTA and several parent meetings focused on school site safety. Bard School wants to encompass putting student safety at the forefront and keeping in mind the layout and culture of our school. Our discussions have led to some positive changes and refinements to gate opening times/closures and supervision. We appreciate your help and support as we make these adjustments when school resumes on August 27, 2019. Parents are welcome on campus for the first week of school, through August 30, 2019 for drop-off and pick-up. Starting on September 3, 2019, we will be implementing our “SAFE Campus” guidelines for all visitors (please see below). Make sure to discuss a drop-off and pick-up plan with your child and share this with their teacher and begin practicing right away. Please note, kindergarten parents are encouraged to stay with their child in the kindergarten area only. All other students are to line up on the blacktop by their classroom number.
Currently there are 5 entry points to campus (2 main front gates, a side gate by the parking lot and 2 cul de sac gates off of Lillian Drive and Jerry Drive). The gate off of kindergarten will be closed as we do not have supervision to cover this area.
All gates will be closed at the final 8:00am bell.
The front main gate by kindergarten, the side gate by the parking lot and the two cul de sac gates will be reopened for dismissal.
ASES Program students will line up on the lines outside the cafeteria and across from Room 1 where ASES staff will wait for them.
Students who will be attending the Boys and Girls Club will line up by the side of the cafeteria to be crossed over to the facility.
Students who will be attending the Hueneme Youth Center on Base will line up on the side of the cafeteria where the Hueneme Youth Center Staff will wait for them.
Breakfast will be served from 7:20am to 7:50am. There is no supervision provided before 7:20 a.m. Students who are not eating breakfast may arrive on campus at 7:45a.m. where they may line up on the blacktop and supervision begins.
First bell-Unless they are eating breakfast, students may not arrive on campus prior to 7:45am since there is no supervision.
A warning bell will ring at 7:55am at which time teachers will begin picking up students from their line.
Gate closures will take place at the final bell which rings at 8:00am and when instruction begins.
Any adults intending to volunteer need to report directly to the office to follow visitor procedures, receive a badge and sign in.
Parking Lot Safety
The safety of our students is extremely important to everyone at Bard Elementary School. Help us protect all students by making safety and courteousness the top priority in the parking lot and drop-off areas. Following the signs, painted curbs and direction by school personnel will ensure that our children are afforded the protection they deserve. When students exit the vehicles, they must do so only on the passenger’s side. Drivers are to remain in the vehicle unless parked in a marked parking space. Please make a commitment to yourself and our children to emphasize and model safety at all times. The student’s, other parents, and staff members appreciate your assistance.
Attendance and Tardies
Attendance is very important. We want to ensure that your child is successful and does not miss instruction. Please help your child stay on track with learning by having them at school each and every day on time! If your child is absent, please call our school at (805) 488-3583 to report the absence.
Flag Gathering Fridays
The first Friday of the month we hold Flag gathering on the outdoor stage. Parents are invited to this outdoor assembly to celebrate learning. PTA provides coffee and goodies for parents in the cafeteria immediately after the flag gathering. Please consider joining us.
The following procedures will be updated on our website and included in the Parent/Student Handbook:
Visits to School
Parents are always welcome at Bard School. Call the office or teacher ahead of time for a classroom visit. The suggested length of each visit is one hour. Please schedule an appointment to conference with the teacher for after school, as to not interrupt the instructional day.
Bard is a “SAFE Campus” and we believe in the following to ensure the safety for all:
S- Sign in and pick-up a visitor’s badge
A- Acknowledge staff and school safety policies
F- Find the class you are visiting and focus on school safety
E- Enjoy your stay!
Always check in at the office before coming on campus to pick-up a visitor’s badge. Following these school procedures will help ensure safety for all students and staff at Bard School.
Please refer to our Parent/Student Handbook for more information.
